ON COURSE REPORT & WEATHER
Tasmania has experienced one of the wettest winters on record. However, owing to the unique topography of Tasmania Golf Club, the course has remained open for play every day.
The current state of the golf course is regarded as very good, having regard to recent weather conditions.
Greens are excellent and have been verti-drained to promote drying despite the wet weather. There is a small area of ground under repair on the centre of the 9th green that is rapidly improving but greens otherwise rate 8.5/10.
Tee beds are very good and have recently been cored to promote drying ahead of planned rolling and levelling leading up to the major events scheduled for the spring. Tee positions are rotated twice weekly with up to 4 separate tees (black, white, yellow and red) in use to protect the tee beds from wear and tear. Overall rating 8/10.
Fairways are generally extremely good. The 12th, 13th and 14th holes are subject to preferred lies with placement within 1 club length permitted due to wet conditions in limited areas of those holes. Of course, the rules of golf related to abnormal ground conditions, including casual water, apply in any event. Overall rating is 7.5/10.
Bunkers are good although the sand is damp in many (not wet) due to persistent rain. There are 2 bunkers (of the 47 on the golf course) that have casual water in situ and this is an intermittent and improving situation. Visitors should note that bunkers at Tasmania Golf Club are designed to be firm, demanding high levels of skill to exit. Overall rating 7.5/10.
Roughs are as expected for the winter with limited growth evident. Current course maintenance activities are focussed on clearing roughs and overhanging branches ahead of the strong winds normally experienced during the spring. Rough may be expected to be deeper and longer during spring and summer than in past years. Overall rating 7.5/10.
